Mr. Asif Ali, Controller General of Accounts, Government of Bangladesh, was sworn in as the new Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh on January 2, 2003. Mr. Ali did his BA (Honours) in Political Science securing second position on the merit list and MA in Political Science. He also did his graduation in Law from Dhaka University and taught in the Political Science Department, Dhaka University. He joined the erstwhile Pakistan Military Accounts Service in 1971 and was subsequently encadred in Bangladesh Civil Service(Audit and Accounts) Cadre. He served as Assistant Controller of Military Accounts, Deputy Controller of Military Accounts, Senior Finance Controller (Navy), Senior Finance Controller (Air Force), Additional Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General, Director, Civil Audit, Director Audit and Accounts Training Academy, Additional Accountant General(Civil), Additional Controller General of Accounts, Additional Director General, Commercial Audit, Additional Director General(Finance), Bangladesh Railway, Director General, Audit and Accounts Training Academy, Director General, Financial Management Academy and Controller General of Accounts. He received professional training on "Audit of Public Enterprises" in India held between January 25-March 19, 1982 and attended the workshop of the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) on “Computerized Government Auditing Systems and EDP/IT Auditing” in Seoul, South Korea held between August 26-September 4, 1996, the 7th Assembly and Sixth International Seminar on "The Role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in Promoting Efficient and Effective Public Administration through Performance Auditing" of Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions(ASOSAI) in Jakarta, Indonesia held between October 1-11, 1997, a Seminar on "The Role of Supreme Audit Institutions in Auditing Public Works" of International Organasation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) in Vienna, Austria held between March 16-20, 1998 and the 18th Commonwealth Auditors-General Conference on "Re-engineering Auditing in The Public Sector" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held between October 6-10, 2002. He was a member of UN Audit Teams and audited the UNDP and UNICEF Headquarters, New York, USA and the UNEP Headquarters, Nairobi, Kenya. He authored a number of books on auditing and accounting and has many publications in domestic as well as international journals. He was born on 22 June, 1946 and is the son of late Dr. Nawab Ali, MRCP; FRCP who was the Professor of Medicine, Calcutta Medical College and Dhaka Medical College; the Founder Principle of Dhaka Medical College and Surgeon General of the then East Pakistan.
