The tenure of office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh has been recently extended by an amendment of the constitution of the country. Prior to this amendment, the constitutional provision regarding the tenure of office was that the Auditor General shall hold office until he attains the age of sixty years. But this provision has now been amended by the Constitution (Fourteenth Amendment) Act. 2004. The new provision, as incorporated in the constitution, provides that the Auditor General shall hold office for five years from the date on which he entered upon his office, or until he attains the age of sixty five years, whichever is earlier.
Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Asif Ali submitted 47 audit reports to the Hon’ble President, Professor Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban on 3 March 2004. The audit reports included 16 special reports, 30 annual audit reports and 1 Appropriation Accounts.
The special audit reports covered reports on Dredger Department and store of 4 offices of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) under Water Resources Ministry, Store Department of Chief Engineer’s Office, Public Works Department (PWD), Dhaka; Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA); Local Govt. Department under Local Govt., Rural Development and Cooperative Ministry, Annual Reports of Bangladesh Cricket Board, Bonded Ware House and Custom House. Annual audit reports included reports on Ministries of Finance, Communication, Food, Fisheries and Livestock, Civil aviation and Tourism. President Prof. Dr. Iazuddin Ahmed appreciated the steps taken by the CAG to improve the quality of audit reports.
